Episode #5- “Contracts”

Contracts

One aspect of business many business owners including myself hate dealing with is the paperwork.  A very important part of this paperwork is contracts.

Contracts serve several purposes in business,

  • the first is to identify the parties entering into the agreement.
  • the second is to layout the responsibilities of the parties included in the contract
  • the third is to clearly state the previous, and serve as a point of reference should any issues arise and legal actions need to be taken.

I’ve had clients sign contracts and attempt to makeup new terms on the fly, but I always direct them back to the contract.  My favorite line is “I understand that Mr Smith but if you refer to your contract it clearly states….”.  I’m not sure if they don’t fully read over the or if clients just don’t care what’s written in the contract.

If there are misunderstandings when there are contracts in place, can You Imagine the types of disagreements that can arise when there is no contract between 2 parties?  I hear about word of mouth “contracts” gone bad everyday.

Episode #4- “Business Negotiations”

Business Negotiations

Negotiations in business can be like a game of chess.  For those who have never played, chess is a game of strategy and positioning your pieces on the board.

When I was a new business owner I had a terrible habit of waiting to negotiate price until after the job was already done.

Part of this was because I had a fear of losing business.

The other part of this came about because I had no idea how to price my services.

As I stated in an earlier episode I just started my first business on a whim, without any prior research or due diligence.

I thought just knowing how to do the job was all I needed to run a successful business.

In this episode I discuss strategies for negotiating and things to keep in mind when meeting with clients.

This was originally meant to be a part of Episode 3, but I had so much important information I wanted to share with my viewers so I had to turn this into its own separate video.

After Episode 2 I got letters from two viewers about businesses they wanted to start.

The first letter I got was from Osagie who was interested in starting an electronics rental company in Nigeria.

The second letter I received was from Kola who was looking for advice on starting a business that wouldn’t take too much time away from studying while he was in college.  He had some research on online retail and had some doubts about going that route.

In this video I respond to their questions and give them pointers on getting their businesses off the ground successfully.

One of the key pillars  to conducting business as well as growing it to the next level is networking.

Now over the years the word networking has been used way to loosely.

That’s why today’s episode is Productive Networking and not simply networking.

So many people think networking is going down to the local bar for happy hour and passing out a few cards.

I think too many people try to justify socializing by calling it ‘networking’.

Another major pitfall hopeful entrepreneurs face is the daunting task of financing their business.

Traditionally startup businesses can be capital-intensive, and require an excessive amount of startup cash.

Even when the economic market was at its peak most financial institutions weren’t handing out business loans to everybody that walked into the bank asking for one.  Lenders would actually rather give you a home or auto loan they know you couldn’t afford before they gave you a business loan on a business that might actually work.
